Checklist for Recovery Leaders

The following checklist summarizes some of the things a recovery leader should do in preparation for, and after a hurricane.

Before the Hurricane

  • Prepare yourself and your family to remain safe and be able to help the community after a hurricane.

As the Hurricane Approaches

  • Become familiar with the Principles of Disaster Recovery.
  • Sign up at CrisisCleanup.org to receive a stake passcode.

0-72 Hours After the Hurricane

  • Keep yourself and your family safe.
  • Help priesthood leaders and the VOAD representative ascertain the safety and needs of members, missionaries, and church property.

72 Hours to 8 Weeks after the Hurricane

  • Coordinate the stake’s daily recovery operations. Over-communicate with stake leaders and the VOAD Representative.
  • Train team leaders to follow the Principles of Disaster Recovery.
  • Review safety policies and procedures.
  • Attend the optional weekly all-hands meeting, if possible.
  • Share stake passcode with all authorized volunteers and team leaders, but not with unauthorized persons or individuals not associated with the stake.
  • Organize and coordinate teams. Instruct team leaders to claim their own work orders at CrisisCleanup.org.
  • Arrange for age-appropriate youth service.
  • Teach team leaders and volunteers the policies on Proselytizing, Mormon Helping Hands T-Shirts, Crisis Cleanup, Homeowner Releases, Mold, History & Photos, Reimbursement, Insurance, and Safety.
  • Coordinate regularly with the Church VOAD representative.
  • Coordinate with the VOAD representative to find out what other VOAD organizations are operating in your stake. Develop a relationship with those organizations where possible.
  • Coordinate efforts with Public Affairs representatives.
  • Refer to Crisis Cleanup for a list of primary contacts in other stakes and organizations.
  • Train team leaders and volunteers to not spray for mold. Leaving a fan or doing nothing is preferable to spraying for mold.
  • Train team leaders and volunteers to always leave a copy of the Statement of Work Performed, with residents.

8 Weeks-3 months after the Hurricane

  • Assist the stake president as necessary.
